HDRG Summit 2010

FEBRUARY 2010 GLOBAL CONNECTION NEWSPAPER
HDRG Summit Provides High tech Cutting Edge Topics
by James Madill, Contributing Writer

The fourth annual Heavy Duty Remanufacturing Group Summit was well attended. Most attendees remarked on the quality of the presentations and that they wouldn't be able to find the information anywhere else. A new horseshoe shaped seating format encouraged discussion, which many found very beneficial. Our speakers found their audience very engaged, posing many good questions.

Some of the discussion will lead to future meeting subjects, such as the difference between the DPF and the DEF injection process. Omar Cueto, CEO of DIESELOGIC.COM, discussed the effects of properly calibrated injectors on the DPF efficiency. This led to the diesel injection fluid process, which is a separate process, even though it is combined with the DPF function to yield a cleaner burning engine.

Sandra Standley, HDRG Chairman, opened the meeting and introduced Joe Kripli, CEO of Remaco Group, who discussed mechatronics and its effect on the diesel engine rebuilder. One point Joe made about not cutting the wiring on mechatronic devices was a money saving tip that one attendee exclaimed could save his company thousands of dollars. Joe was making the point that we have to view all components as potential value when dismantling major components. Electrical components are important and of much value to the mechatronics components.

Omar Cueto followed Joe with an outline of the fuel system with an emphasis on proper calibration for an effective DPF, DEF process. Omar has developed his own brand of calibration equipment with his own algorithms for the independent diesel service provider. In essence, his system provides the independent with accurate, quality settings without the exorbitant cost of buying an OE system.

The third annual “Heavy Duty Remanufacturer of the Year Award” was presented to ArvinMeritor at the awards luncheon. ArvinMeritor was the first component manufacturer that has received the award. HDRG policy is that it is open to all facets of the remanufacturing industry, and Arvin Meritor has been at the forefront of the reman business as evidenced by their growth in recent years. Doug Wolma and Todd Kindem were on hand to receive the award along with others from their company.

Previous recipients of the “HDRG Remanufacturer of the Year” Award were Mike Hill of Precision Rebuilders in St. Clair, Missouri and John Weller of Weller Truck Parts in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After the luncheon Alan Lesesky of Vehicle Enhancement Systems and Richard LaFrancois of Equipment Maintenance Innovators, spoke about their efforts to develop hybrid electrical and hydraulic systems for their customers who include the Denver Airport, the Alaskan Pipeline Company, and BP Oil. Richard has developed an automatic shutdown system that can save a huge amount of fuel in regular and hybrid applications.

Dr. Michael Readey of Aeris Analytics discussed carbon emissions and how they may translate into carbon credits which could become quite valuable to rebuilders/remanufacturers—a topic which will require the future attention of our industry. Richard explained how carbon emissions are determined. He also provides assistance to companies in calculating their carbon footprint and their emissions levels. He has extensive experience in this area and will write future articles in the Global Connection.

Patrick Carpenter of SRC explained how the SRC companies sell the reman advantage to their customers and the ultimate users to whom their customers sell. He had a step-by-step process that they use in the selling process.

Sandra Standley, HDRG Chairman and Tim Roth, SRC.

We will shortly be announcing the dates of the next combined meeting that will feature tours of four of the facilities at SRC in Springfield, Missouri. This will include the following APRA Divisions: Electrical, Heavy Duty Transmission, Heavy Duty Brake and Volume Transmission. We also hope to arrange the meeting at a time when Jack Stack will be available to speak to the group.

Tim Roth of SRC’s Megavolt Company spoke about how the industry needs to mount an effective lobbying campaign to encourage remanufacturing with tax credits and grants for studies about the industry so that our country’s leaders have a real appreciation for the valuable contributions we make to protecting the environment and creating jobs. The time has come to position our industry to double over the next ten years. Everyone is talking about sustainability, and remanufacturing is the answer to most of our country's needs. Remanufacturing can increase employment and economic activity as well as conserve energy and reduce waste…all of which are better for the environment and can lead to a more prosperous economy. Readers will be able to see more of this in future issues of the Global Connection.
